The 5 biggest myths surrounding stainless steel

Stainless steel door handle - Stainless Steel Blog

Stainless steel is a widely used material in and around the house. However, much remains unclear about stainless steel, which sometimes leads to misunderstanding by the end-user. The biggest myths debunked.

1. Stainless steel does not rust

The biggest myth about stainless steel is that stainless steel cannot rust. Stainless steel is called stainless steel by many people, but the correct term is stainless steelThis reinforces the false belief that stainless steel is completely stainless.

Stainless steel is an alloy of iron, nickel, chromium, and carbon. The chrome in the alloy provides a wafer-thin impermeable layer, which protects the underlying metal against aggressive and corrosive external influences, for example, comparable to a paint layer. This layer is maintained by oxygen from the outside. If this layer is damaged, it will repair itself. If a damaged area is closed off from oxygen - for example, due to an accumulation of dirt - the underlying metal will become active and initiate the rusting process. Read more about this in our blog about flash rust on stainless steelAfter cleaning and removing the pollution, oxygen will return to the material, so that the chrome layer can recover. Stainless steel is stainless, not stainless! For this reason, it will have to be cleaned regularly.

2. It is best to polish stainless steel with a drop of baby oil or olive oil

The oil will only make your stainless steel door handles and banisters greasy and dirty, so it is not a good idea to use baby oil or olive oil. It does shine beautifully, but in no time your entire house will be covered with greasy finger stains. In addition, dust and dirt remain in the oil, with the result that it only gets dirty. Oil is a greasy product for lubrication, but it is not a polish. We recommend a good stainless steel cleaner or other polish, these products make the surface free of dirt and grease.

3. RVS304 is only suitable for indoor use

Although RVS304 is often only recommended for indoor applications, we think this is a bit short-sighted. RVS304 can be used very well outside if it meets a number of conditions. If the stainless steel is outside in the rain and/or it is regularly maintained and washed (such as door fittings), this will not be a problem. The stainless steel will then remain clean and free from contamination and rust for years. You can read more about the different types of stainless steel and for which applications they are suitable on our website.

4. Stainless steel is maintenance-free

Stainless steel is low maintenance, but certainly not maintenance free. Without maintenance, the highest alloyed stainless steel will also become contaminated with all its consequences. We, therefore, advise you to read our blog about the maintenance of stainless steel.

5. Stainless steel is not magnetic

There are dozens of types of stainless steel. They all have their own properties, advantages, and disadvantages. In general, stainless steel is known as non-magnetic. However, this is not entirely true. There are stainless steel types to which a magnet "sticks". For example, the so-called martensitic, ferritic, and duplex stainless steel types are indeed magnetic. Just think of the stainless steel extractor hood, plastic door handle, or stainless steel refrigerator. These are special stainless steel types with magnetic properties.

The stainless steel types that are usually used in and around the house are the types RVS304 and RVS316. These are austenitic stainless steel types from the 300 series. These are not magnetic when delivered. However, by cold forming, such as converting or grinding the surface, the crystal structure will change, certainly on the surface, resulting in magnetic properties in this stainless steel type. In short: RVS304 and RVS316 can become slightly magnetic due to intensive surface processing.
